Square Feet to Square Meters: Real Estate and Home Improvement

Published on June 24, 2026 · 9 min read

You are looking at an apartment listing in Mexico City and it shows 85 m² — you have no idea if that is spacious or tiny. You are buying flooring tiles sold by the square meter but your room measurements are in feet. You are comparing real estate prices in the US and Europe and need to convert $/sq ft to €/m². Square feet and square meters are the two most common ways to measure living space — and this guide makes switching between them effortless.

The Exact Formula

1 square foot = 0.092903 square meters (exact)

Square Meters = Square Feet × 0.092903

Square Feet = Square Meters × 10.7639

For mental math: divide square feet by 10.76 to get square meters. Or remember — 1 m² ≈ 10.76 sq ft. So multiply m² by 10 and add 7.6% for square feet, or divide sq ft by 10 and subtract 7% for m².

Mental Math Shortcuts

Trick 1: Divide sq ft by 10 (fast estimate)

Divide square feet by 10 for rough m². Example: 1000 sq ft ÷ 10 = 100 m². Exact: 92.9 m². You will over-estimate by 7.6% but it is fast for apartment size comparisons.

Trick 2: Multiply m² by 10.76 (accurate)

Multiply m² by 10.76. Example: 85 m² × 10.76 = 914.6 sq ft. For mental math: multiply by 10, then add 7.6% (about 76 per 100). 85 × 10 = 850, + 64 (7.6%) = 914. Close enough!

Trick 3: The 10-yard-square anchor

100 sq ft ≈ 9.29 m². So roughly: 100 sq ft ≈ 9 m². Memorize this pair and scale everything from it. 500 sq ft ≈ 46.5 m². 1000 sq ft ≈ 93 m². 2000 sq ft ≈ 186 m².

Apartment Sizes: What m² Feels Like

Under 30 m² (320 sq ft)

Micro apartment — possible in Tokyo or Paris. Single room with fold-down bed and minimal kitchen.

30–50 m² (320–540 sq ft)

Studio apartment — common in European cities. One main room, small kitchen, bathroom.

50–80 m² (540–860 sq ft)

Small 1-bedroom — comfortable for one person, tight for a couple. Typical urban European apartment.

80–100 m² (860–1076 sq ft)

Comfortable 2-bedroom — good for a couple or small family. Average European family apartment.

100–150 m² (1076–1615 sq ft)

Spacious apartment or small house — 3 bedrooms, comfortable living areas. Well above European average.

150–200 m² (1615–2153 sq ft)

Large house — generous rooms, possible home office, garden or garage. Average US home territory.

200+ m² (2153+ sq ft)

Very spacious — luxury by European standards. Normal large family home in American suburbs.

Flooring: Calculating How Much to Buy

European flooring and tiles are sold by the m². American rooms are measured in feet. Here is how to calculate how many m² of flooring you need:

Formula:

Room length (ft) × Room width (ft) ÷ 10.764 = Square meters needed

Example: 12 ft × 14 ft = 168 sq ft ÷ 10.764 = 15.6 m²

Always add 10% for waste and cuts: 15.6 × 1.1 = 17.2 m² to order

Paint Coverage: sq ft vs m²

American paint cans list coverage in square feet. European paint uses m². Standard coverage rates:

  • US paint: ~400 sq ft per gallon (1 coat) = ~37 m² per gallon
  • European paint: ~10–12 m² per liter (1 coat) = ~108–130 sq ft per liter
  • Quick rule: 1 liter of European paint ≈ 0.26 gallons of US paint in coverage
